What are Potholes?
Potholes are sections of a road where the surface develops cracks and breaks away due to repeated traffic passing over it. This creates a hole with rough vertical edges. Initially starting as small cracks, potholes can grow rapidly, expanding from just a few centimetres to over a metre wide and more than ten centimetres deep if left unfixed.
Are Potholes Dangerous?
Potholes can cause serious accidents if they are not repaired. They can damage a car’s tyres, wheels or axles but the biggest risk is to cyclists and motorcyclists as their tires can get caught, causing them to fall off. In the UK there have been hundreds of serious injuries and fatalities as a result of potholes.
What Causes Potholes and Cracks?
Even though tarmac and asphalt is a very hard wearing surface, it will eventually wear down and need repairing. There are 5 stages of pothole formation, which are:
- Wear to road surface: Years of constant usage can cause small surface cracks to form, which can expand over time.
- Water enters the cracks: The surface deteriorates further as rain and moisture seeps down into the surface, soaking the base layers and soil below.
- Traffic breaks up the surface: As vehicles continue to drive over the road, small pieces of tarmac or asphalt get dislodged, starting a pothole. Water from traffic splashes into the layers beneath the road, carrying dirt particles with it. This dirt weakens the layers under the road, making the pavement weaker and causing more flexing when cars pass over it.
- Freeze-thaw cycles speed up the problem: The pothole gets larger and deeper during winter as water in the road freezes and expands, opening up cracks and breaking the surface around it.
- Standing water deepens potholes: Following rain, water pools in the pothole. As cars drive over them, the water washes away more material from the pothole, causing the pothole to grow bigger and deeper at a rapid rate.
